Spied: 2013 Honda Civic Type-R Prototype

The hot hatch is coming along nicely, but almost certainly won’t be sold stateside. Honda has built hot-hatch versions of the Civic for the past two generations, and these photos, shot close to Honda's technical center close to the Nurburgring, indicate Honda is working on a Type-R version of the 2013 Civic.The most glaring design feature is the massive rear spoiler, but don't expect to see this on the finished article. Most likely the engineers have added it while playing around with the car's aerodynamics package ahead of firming up the car's design.

Do expect the production Type-R to feature a deep front spoiler, a new rear bumper with diffuser, wider and bigger wheels and sportier seats. This, coupled with firmer springs and dampers, will differentiate the Type-R from the stock Civic. A member of one of Honda's new family of engines will power the 2013 Honda Civic Type-R, most likely a VTEC delivering some 220-230hp.The hot-hatch sector is really heating up and soon enough those with a desire for pocket power will be spoiled for choice what with the Focus ST, Astra VXR and Golf GTI all looming large and now the Civic Type-R thrown into the mix.

These spy pictures could be the first evidence that Honda is working on a new version of the revered Honda Civic Type R. Our photographers spied two test cars near Honda’s technical center at the Nürburgring, both wearing a large, unsubtle spoilers over their rear windows.

Together with some minor body modifications, these cars could be early chassis test mules for the next hot Civic, the standard version of which went on sale in the UK earlier this year.

At last year’s Tokyo motor show senior Honda sources confirmed to Autocar that the hot hatch is likely to make a return, probably in 2013.

Manabu Nishimae, president of Honda Motor Europe, admitted that “customers are keen to see sporty models and while we can’t deliver immediately we are going to develop and deliver those products.”

Expect the Civic Type-R to stick to its classic defining characteristics of a high-revving naturally aspirated petrol motor putting out over 200bhp and focusing on handling prowess rather than outright pace.

Unlike previous Civic Type-R iterations, however, the new car is destined to be a five-door, rather than three-door.

Yoshikazu Kigoshi, general manager for Honda research and design centre, described the new Type-R as having “special bumpers, wheels, spoilers and seats,” to set it apart from the standard car, as well as the usual firmer springs and more hardcore settings.

It was also confirmed that Mugen would not be involved in the development of the Civic Type-R despite the tuning firm’s hand in last year’s Mugen CR-Z.

The return of Type-R is yet another indication of how seriously the Japanese maker is now taking its performance cars. There are rumours that more Type-R models could appear in the current range, but nothing is confirmed.

Vi har inte testkört nya Honda Civic Type R eftersom bilen officiellt inte existerar.
Vi skriver inte någonstans att vi kört den.

Bilen på bilderna är en så kallad mula. Alla blivande bilmodeller är i ett första skede mulor.
Det vill säga teknik så som chassi och andra komponenter testas under en kaross som inte
tillhör den riktiga bilen. Den färdiga karossen kommer att testas under ett senare skede och
då är den maskerad.

Hur den kommer se ut kan vi inte med säkerhet precisera, men föreställ dig förra generationen
Civic hur den blev omvandlad till Type R. Gör motsvarande förvandling på nya Civic så har du
en fingervisning.

Det är ju ingen nyhet att honda totalt tappat allt när det gäller motorsport...

Ingen F1, ingen S2000, integra, Prelude, NSX inga Type-R...
År efter år får man höra att "snart" kommer det något när andra biltillverkare spottar ur bilar som kommer och går innan nästa "koncept" visas som aldrig blir något av honda.
Inte ens eco-delen är de speciellt framträdande på...
Så nej, i bästa fall kommer väl en "type-S" med lite spoilers och annat bling...
